Common Questions

What is the difference between federal VA benefits and state veterans benefits?

Federal VA benefits — disability compensation, healthcare, GI Bill — are available to all eligible veterans regardless of where they live, administered by the US Department of Veterans Affairs. State veterans benefits are additional programmes run by each state, which can include property tax exemptions, education benefits, bonus pay, and employment preference. Our guides cover both.

How do I know if I am eligible for VA disability compensation?

You generally need an honourable discharge and a current disability connected to your military service. The VA rates disabilities from 0–100% in 10% increments. The PACT Act of 2022 significantly expanded presumptive conditions for veterans exposed to toxic substances. Check your state guide for local claims assistance resources.

Are there free resources to help me file a VA claim?

Yes. Veterans Service Officers (VSOs) provide free, accredited claims assistance in every state. County veterans services offices also provide free help. Never pay anyone to file a VA claim on your behalf — charging for VA claims assistance is illegal.
